Taiwan TFDA Labeling Requirements

Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) regulates medical device labeling under the Medical Devices Act (醫療器材管理法) and its enforcement rules. Key requirements for packaging labels include:

  • Product name in Traditional Chinese (繁體中文) and the registered English name.
  • Medical device license number — formatted as 醫器製字第XXXXXX號 (domestically manufactured) or 醫器輸字第XXXXXX號 (imported).
  • Manufacturer name, address, and telephone number in Chinese.
  • Lot number (批號) and manufacturing date or expiration date.
  • Storage conditions and warnings in Chinese.
  • Instructions for use — either printed on the package or included as an insert.

  • Name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor. For Taiwan-made devices, this is usually the US importer or distributor.
  • UDI (Unique Device Identification) — a GS1-format barcode (typically GS1-128 or DataMatrix) encoding the DI (Device Identifier) and PI (Production Identifier) including lot number, expiration date, and manufacturing date. UDI is mandatory for Class II and III devices and is being phased in for Class I.
  • Adequate directions for use or an exemption under 21 CFR 801.109.

  • CE marking with the notified body number (for devices requiring third-party conformity assessment).
  • UDI-DI carrier — an AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture) barcode, typically GS1 DataMatrix, linked to the EUDAMED database.
